Excerpts from INVISIBLE LOVELINESS
PAGE 13 SOLITUDE
Cloth of the upper wine
Cover the one who hides in your blue thighs
Pour all your bitterness into me
As I swim up to the deeper shades of your silence
Scald me in these flames
O purity!
II
Infant’s lips at the breast
Draw sweetness from inimitable pool
I have left all else
Lost my head in cool calabashes
Let me drink till I live
Sour milk!
III
You called me out of the mesh
Chose me among briers
Take me to the secret places
Where you have taken no one
Let’s traverse the clouds
My love, my love!
IV
Sky and blood-earth in solemn dance
Calm descending -
Never let me go, soul shelter
Silky wrapper of July’s eventide
Twinge of a million burns
Rosebud in piecing thorns
Losing myself in you restores my essence
Sweet, sweet solitude!
Page 33 KISSES OF THE NIGHT
Where gods assemble in gold
To kiss away their loneliness
Wondering if they should keep
All the wealth of the land
The night stands between their lips
Dragging them apart.
Page 87 DAWN OF FREEDOM
And so shall we
Who have smashed
The iron bars
Walk away
Into grim realities
The key of the door of which
We only need to turn
Opening the eyes of the morning.
